Launched by the Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM) and observed on October 2, the annual WDFA event is designed to increase awareness of the suffering of animals raised for slaughter. The initiative works to eliminate the view of animals as commodities rather than living, sentient beings.
WDFA encourages people to support its mission by moving away from consumption of animal products, such as meat, dairy, and eggs. WDFA events occur throughout the world and require the input of volunteers. In addition to handing out WDFA brochures, volunteers can pledge to Fast Against Slaughter on WDFA in solidarity of the billions of animals abused and killed every year.
WDFA 2014 saw the largest display of activist support in the initiative's history. In addition to far-reaching support in the United States and Canada through organized slaughterhouse protests and other action, WDFA was observed through planned events in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Russia.
